I’m holding up the line at Solomon’s Bakery and Deli. It’s not easy to choose just one sweet treat from the appealing selection of German chocolate, vanilla and carrot cakes.
“I like the carrot cake,” suggests a voice.
I turn and smile at the older man behind me. “But then again, you can always order two different slices,” he says.
Good thinking. This regular, Dave, has been eating at the 20-year old bakery for three years. After a forkful into the carrot cake, I can agree with his choice.
The square of cake ($1.99) is coated in a thick cream cheese frosting that’s then covered in shaved almonds. A look into the triple layers shows a dense cake surrounding even more cream cheese filling. It’s the type of dessert that simply looks decadent, and it is. A mix of nuts and raisins add a delicious crunch to the cake, and pineapple brings intense sweetness and moisture.
To continue the sugar rush, I move onto the vanilla cake ($1.99). If you’re a fan of frosting, this cake is for you. The fluffy white stuff dominates the pretty minimal slice of cake, not a problem in my book. The confection looks even sweeter with its topping of multicolored sprinkles. Inside is another inch-thick strip of vanilla icing, mixed with a jelly filling. The cake’s exaggerated sweetness should satisfy my sweet tooth for the next week.
The menu also boasts a long list of lunchtime favorites. Solomon’s King for a Day ($8.95) is impossible to finish, in true Jewish deli style. It’s a triple decker of corned beef, pastrami and coleslaw piled atop the bakery’s freshly-made rye bread. The bread is really what makes this sandwich. The caraway seeds spice up each slice, and the overall salty sandwich. Each bite into the well-seasoned stack is delicious.
The offerings might look fairly traditional, but Solomon’s bakery really has it all. Gluten-free products include breads, buns, cookies, cupcakes and cakes. Check out their website for further information about a custom-made cake or to see their behind-the-scenes video showing the baking process. Yeah, the music makes it sound pretty cinematic.
I notice the bakery’s sign that reads, “Enter as strangers, leave as friends.”
I say good bye to Dave. He waves and continues talking to other patrons.
We’re all following the baker’s orders.
